Sponsored messages in public Telegram channels: the category checked against Telegram's own rules before launch, channels picked by hand and checked for real readers, short copy written in versions and tested by channel, and a route after the click — into a channel or a bot — that can be measured.
What the work actually is
Telegram Ads sells one format: a short sponsored message shown inside public channels. There is no feed, no autoplay video and no retargeting audience built from your site. What you buy is a place in front of the readers of specific channels, and what decides the result is which channels you pick and what the message says in the space it has.
How the platform works
- Ads run only in public one-to-many channels with 1,000 or more subscribers — not in private chats or groups.
- Targeting is by specific channels, by channel topic and by the reader's language. Nothing is built from personal data or from visits to your site.
- An ad is up to 160 characters of text and one button.
- The button leads inside Telegram only: a bot, a public channel or a post in one. The official platform does not allow links to external websites.
- Readers with Telegram Premium do not see sponsored messages.
- Targeting cannot be edited once an ad is created; changing it means a new ad.
- Budget is paid in advance and spent per thousand views.
- Every ad is reviewed against Telegram's advertising guidelines before it runs.
Review comes before setup
Telegram publishes its own advertising guidelines, and in several of the categories we work in they are stricter than Meta's or Google's — some offers that run elsewhere with the right permissions are not accepted here at all. So the first question is the same as everywhere we work: is this category allowed, in these languages, and on what terms. You get the answer before a budget is committed, not in a rejection.
Channel selection is the targeting
With no behavioural audiences to lean on, the channel list does the work audiences do elsewhere. We build it by hand: channels whose readers match the offer, checked for real activity rather than subscriber counts, grouped so results can be compared channel by channel. Channels that spend without returning anything are cut on the evidence, not on a hunch.
Writing for 160 characters
The ad is mostly words — up to 160 characters and a button — so every word has to earn its place and still pass review. We write several versions per angle, run them against the same group of channels and keep a record of which wording was rejected and why — the same discipline we apply to creative everywhere else.
Where the click goes
A sponsored message sends people to a channel, a bot or a single post, and each needs preparing. A channel needs content worth staying for. A bot needs a funnel that explains the offer and qualifies people before it collects them. If the end goal is a website, the route runs through the bot or the channel first — which is also where measurement starts. We already build Telegram bot funnels for Meta traffic — the webcam studio recruiting case is one — and the same approach applies here.
What you see each week
Spend, results by channel, and the changes we made. Telegram's statistics show views and clicks; what happens after the click is measured in the bot or the channel, and the two are reported separately rather than blended into one number.
