Unrestricted

Gyms, fitness apps and coaching. Unrestricted as a category, with one rule that catches nearly everyone: platforms restrict creative implying negative self-perception about the viewer's body, which rules out most of what the industry instinctively makes.

The rule everybody trips over

Fitness advertising is not a restricted category, but it runs into one of the most consistently enforced creative policies there is: ads may not imply that the viewer should feel bad about their body. Before-and-after pairs, close-ups of an isolated body part, and copy addressing the reader's weight directly get rejected routinely, regardless of how supportive the intent was.

What replaces it is the thing being sold rather than the shame: the training, the coach, the schedule, the room, the people. This is a harder brief and a better one, because it also happens to be what people actually buy.

Seasonality is structural

January exists and pretending otherwise wastes money. Acquisition cost swings enormously across the year, and a budget spread evenly across twelve months overpays in the peak and underbuys the quiet months where the same member is cheap. We plan the year rather than the month.

Retention is the product

A gym membership sold to somebody who stops attending in six weeks is a refund with extra steps. The acquisition number is easy to move and the retention number is where the business is, which means the campaign has to be judged on members still active at ninety days — a metric that only exists if the CRM sends it back.

Channels

Local search and maps for anything with a physical location. Paid social for apps and coaching, where the audience is defined by intent rather than by postcode. Organic for the enormous informational demand around training and nutrition, which is the cheapest audience in the category and the one most operators ignore.
